Why Does My Business Rank on Google Maps in One Area but Not Another?
It is common for a business to rank well on Google Maps in one city, neighborhood, or ZIP code but not rank as well in another. This usually happens because Google Maps ranking is strongly influenced by location, relevance, and competition.
Proximity is a major reason. If your business is physically located in Jacksonville, Google may show your listing more often to people searching near your business address. If someone searches from a farther city or town, Google may show businesses that are closer to that searcher.
Search terms also matter. You may rank for “website designer Jacksonville FL” but not for “SEO company Ponte Vedra Beach” if your profile, website, and content are not strongly connected to that second service area and keyword.
Competition can also change by location. One town may have fewer optimized competitors, while another area may have agencies, contractors, or service businesses with stronger reviews, websites, citations, and local authority.
Your website can help support visibility in surrounding areas. Well-written service area pages, city pages, project examples, testimonials, and locally relevant content can help Google understand where your business provides services. These pages should be useful and unique. Simply copying the same page and changing the city name is not a strong strategy.
Your Google Business Profile service areas can also show where you work, but adding service areas does not automatically make you rank in every city listed. Google still considers proximity, relevance, and prominence.
Reviews may help too, especially when customers mention real services and experiences. However, reviews should always come naturally from actual customers.
For businesses that serve multiple areas, a strong local SEO strategy should include Google Business Profile optimization, service area content, local landing pages, website authority, citations, reviews, and rank tracking by location.
At Kelly Advantage, we help businesses understand where they currently rank, where they are missing visibility, and what needs to be improved to compete in specific local markets.
