What Is the Difference Between Google Maps Ranking and Google Search Ranking for Local Businesses?

Google Maps ranking and Google Search ranking are connected, but they are not exactly the same. A local business can rank well in Google Search but not appear strongly in Google Maps, or appear in the Map Pack but have weaker organic rankings.
Google Maps ranking refers to how your business appears in Google Maps and the local Map Pack. This is the group of local business listings that often appears near the top of search results when someone searches for a local service. Maps ranking is heavily influenced by your Google Business Profile, location, categories, reviews, proximity, and local prominence.
Google Search ranking refers to where your website pages appear in the traditional organic search results. These rankings are influenced by website content, page structure, backlinks, internal links, technical SEO, user experience, topical authority, and relevance to the search query.
For example, a customer might search “Google Maps ranking Jacksonville FL.” The Map Pack may show local agencies with optimized Google Business Profiles. Below that, the organic results may show service pages, blog posts, guides, or agency websites that Google sees as helpful for that search.
The two ranking systems often support each other. A strong website can help your Google Business Profile perform better because it gives Google more information about your services, location, expertise, and relevance. A strong Google Business Profile can also drive more calls, direction requests, and website visits.
For local businesses, the best strategy is not to choose one or the other. You need both.
Your Google Business Profile should be complete, active, and optimized. Your website should have strong service pages, local content, clear calls to action, fast loading speed, mobile-friendly design, and helpful FAQs. Reviews, photos, citations, and local content should all work together.
